History :
It had been only a few decades since the first dragons had been created on Pern, creatures bio-engineered to take to the skies and defend them from the silvery menace that fell to the ground, eating everything in its path and leaving only devastation in its wake and already the effects could be felt. Life blossomed as it had rarely before, holds sprang up as the human settlers spread out and began to live their lives less afraid than before, even the natural fauna became more visible, poking their own heads out and breeding more often with a zeal rarely seen in pre-human ages.
But more and more time passed, and the idyllic nature of the newly guarded Pern was less than idyllic. Not every human was happy with their way in life, and not every human felt as if the tiny firelizards should have been 'corrupted' as they were, and of course there were just those few who didn't fit in with society as a whole. Slowly these disillusioned began to gravitate towards each other, forming their own settlements under the name Taak, though the weyrs took little heed of them, their numbers too few and their aggression too weak in the face of the protection the dragons afforded. That is, until Thread tapered off, and finally stopped falling...
Not understanding the cyclical nature of the parasite from another planet, the dragonriders were left unable to continue the duty they'd so recently been created for, and the Holds began to look upon their 'saviors' as mere beasts of burden, sucking their crops and herdbeasts. Though it took turns for it to happen, murmurs of discontent began to turn into shouts, children were hidden when dragonriders came 'searching', and the Taak swell as they began to take up arms against those that had so recently protected them, proclaiming that they had been right all along, that the dragons were nothing more than an abomination that needed to be put down, the eggs left to die off on their own, and for the Pernese people to continue on with their lives without their dragon 'overlords.' Humanity, as always a fickle beast, turned further and further to the Taak, leaving Holds and Weyrs to instead live out in open villages on plains were food was plentiful and farming bountiful. The Taak began to breed and train the natural fauna to do their bidding, but also began to build up forces against the Weyrs, their dragons and whers,
The two opposing factions came to a head when a young dragon, his rider only newly graduated from weyrlinghood, was torn to pieces when he touched down to Search at a formerly receptive Hold, unknown to have been slowly turning Taak. His rider was captured as well, and when the Weyr went to rescue the young man, they were quickly rebuffed by catapults set up to strike their dragons from the sky, and archers going after the whers. It took days, and many deaths on both sides, but eventually the Weyr forces overcame the Taak, only to find the young man slaughtered, his dragon's remains strung up throughout the area, and the survivors fled to take their own version of the story to other people. Before the Weyrs knew it, the Taak, and their allies amongst the unaffiliated, had shown their hands, and began an all out campaign against those who lived in the Weyr. Support for the Taak, and therefore against the Weyr, was simply overwhelming, and battles for territory grew pitched and frequent, Weyr-folk finding themselves hard pressed not to become slaves, their bondmates killed, and their children or relatives taken away from them.
As time passed, it became clear that the Weyrs were outnumbered and outgunned, their saving grace the ability to simply get away faster, and the number of battles they won grew less, and less, and less. With such a large force against them, and their own numbers so few, the remaining weyrs did the one thing they could think of to do... They decided to set up a new weyr far from the reach of the Taak where the dragons and whers could grow to full strength and age, protected and guarded, and then would be able to return and help in the fight for survival. The western continent was chosen as the safest spot, with no large Taak settlement close by, and plans began to quickly be put into action. The expedition was put together over several Turns, pulling mainly from the groups of weyrlings, until all they needed was a Queen to lead them, and finally, one was found. Hailing from the small Alastrion Weyr, a Gold dragon and her rider took up the challenge of heading an entirely new weyr, and along with all the dragons, whers, and people that could be sent, traveled across the war-torn lands and sea to settle in their new home.
Hence Ampor Weyr was created, a safe haven in a world that is all to dangerous, a place for the injured to come and safely recuperate, for the training of weyrling and wherling alike, a resting place for Queens. More turns passed swiftly, the young Alastrion Queen becoming a mighty female, clutching time and time again to produce weyrlings which grew into strong dragons, swelling the wings, wherlings becoming whers and in turn strong guardians, and furthermore, two of the off-shoot species of firelizards being trained in their own right for battle. Strangely, only turns after arriving at the unexplored continent, the dragons and whers alike began to clutch a wider variety of colors than what had been bred into them, with a frequency that indicated these ranks were here to stay... Most blamed the transition to the new area, since these ranks weren't seen outside Ampor, but few really cared all that much, not when the dragons grew up strong and healthy, worthy additions to the wings.
So it was that Ampor Weyr grew to fulfill its mission in being created, becoming well known to all weyrs, though a well-guarded secret that kept it safe for several decades. At least, until it too was discovered. Now, nearly a century after its creation, Ampor Weyr is at a respectable size, a rebel outpost of the battered Weyr forces, but signs of Taak incursion can be seen all too closely, and it can only be a short time before the attacks start coming on this formerly 'peaceful' area. It is in question, however, just who will win, and if Ampor can protect itself without close allies...
And of course, unknown on the horizon, an ancient enemy waiting to strike.
